the night before the fair

I took a walk around the state fair entrance area on Snelling last night just as it was getting dark. I wanted to see--and capture--what it looked like the night before the fair opened. I like the way that these entrance booths look without anyone inside and before the crowds arrive. Sort of ghostly. I'm going tonight for the opening with the Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth. I guess it'll look a little different then. Bring on the cheese . . .

Ours starts in a month in Dallas - I always look forward to the State Fair because it's a harbinger of my birthday (and it's all about ME, isn't it?). There aren't enough foods on sticks in the world, frankly. I hope you have a gut-busting good time.
Oh, Sonic Youth is always a superb show. Enjoy.

Is there really that much cheese? I remember way, way back, I went into the haunted house and was assisted out; I was so scared my knees buckled completely. I was told by security guards that I was probably the first to have been scared out of my wits at a Minnesota State Fair haunted house, if you discount the elderly with heart attacks!! They found me very 'unusual' because I was about 19, too old to be seriously scared and too young for heart failure.

meg nakagawa - Cheese, everywhere. It's a world of cheese. That can be a good thing, in small doses.
Perhaps you were the only normal human ever to enter that haunted house? Then again, weavers function on an entirely different order than the typical thrill-seeker, yeah?

Where oh where is nomad? I think he was pulled into a state fair vortex. Maybe he signed on with a sideshow?

howdy... alas, I didn't run away with the fair, although that would have been fun. I've just been a little distracted in the last few days. Bad blogger. I'm glad to evoke some state fair memories, though. The cheese curds were wonderful as was the foamy beer. I guess that the state fair has similarities with the English seaside culture that I grew up with except that it's cheese instead of fish n chips. I think that booking Sonic Youth and the Flaming Lips was a pretty great move on the past of the organizers. It's usually middle of the road stuff. Okay, let's see if I can get out and take some photographs today...

Or perhaps he's battling a goat-strangling case of indigestion, yet.

Mn bloggers have been having a field day with the Fair, myself included. I think your "ticket booth" foto is great. For more pre-Fair photos, check my visual st paul blog for August 4-6 or thereabouts. Have a good week, Nomad!
